2 Introduction
1 Overview
The VScom Industrial PCI cards offer three way serial ports, the electrical interfaces provided are
RS 232, RS 422 and RS 485 in several operation modes. The cards are designed to control industrial
hardware via asynchronous serial ports, as many software requires today. There are cards for the
modern bus of PCI Express, and also cards to place in the previous Universal PCI bus.
When used in RS 485 modes, the serial ports detect the end of transmission by hardware, so the
RS 485 driver is set in Off state. This feature is named as ART for Automatic Receive Transmit
control. If required the user may also control the the RS 485 driver by his application, using the
hardware signals RTS or DTR on some products.
The supplied drivers for Windows operating system install the serial ports into the Windows API,
so they appear as the usual Com ports software requires. A rich set of driver options is configured
via the Device Manager in Windows. The driver allows to configure the serial ports for a bitrate of
up to 921,600 bps, some models allow up to 15.6 Mbps. Of course RS 232 can not reliably transport
very high bitrates, but RS 422 and RS 485 are designed for 1 Mbps on typical length connection
cables.
2 Introduction
This manual describes the hardware configuration of VScom PCI cards. PCI here especially means
all kinds of PCI buses and the VScom cards designed for those. Namely this is for the classic PCI
cards (5V signal level), Universal PCI cards (3.3V and 5V signal level, including the PCI-X bus),
as well as the PCIex cards (PCI eXpress or PCIe bus).
Also the Windows driver for these cards is described in detail.
2.1 Features
Universal PCI (5V and 3.3V) 32 bit 33MHz
PCI Express x1
Three way serial port interfaces: RS 232, RS 422 and RS 485
Max 921,600 bps, half- and full-duplex
Drivers for Windows operating system
2.2 Product Specifications
The family of industrial cards consists of two cards for the PCI Express bus, or PCIe x1 for short.
There are four other universal cards for the classic PCI bus slots.
All serial ports provide the option to operate with RS 232 electrical interface, as well as RS 422 and
RS 485. In RS 485 the so called direction switching is performed by a hardware automatic named
ART for Automatic Receive Transmit control. This automatic releases the transmission lines in
less than one bit time after the transmission of data has ended.
